Modernizing New York’s Daily Fantasy Sports Laws
Across the country, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) are incredibly popular, and for good reason: They’re simple to learn, fun to play, and safer for consumers than traditional sports betting.
New York has been at the vanguard of laws that support DFS innovation, passing the first set of laws for the industry in 2016. But those laws need updating to keep pace with innovation. Until then, New Yorkers will be denied the most popular games in DFS and directed toward riskier sports betting platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings.
It’s time to modernize New York’s DFS laws, allowing new games to fully enter the market and in doing so:
Generating over $150 million in new tax revenue over the next decade;
Increasing consumer protections for all fantasy sports users; and
Ensuring every DFS operator plays by the same rules.
Boosting NY’s Tax Revenue
In 2022 alone mobile sports gaming generated over $727 million for New Yorkers. Bottom line: the more games the State licenses, the more money we can use to fund critical programs such as education, healthcare and infrastructure. We’re working with lawmakers to generate over $150 million more in new revenue over the next decade.
New Yorkers Deserve an Alternative to Risky Sports Betting
The apps that once championed DFS have left them behind to focus on traditional sports betting, leaving countless sports fans who are eager to play daily fantasy games without a place to go for simpler skill-based pick ‘em games.
Across the country millions of Americans love daily fantasy games because they’re simple, social, and fun – especially for casual fans. It’s time for New York to seize the full potential of Daily Fantasy Sports, bring stability and certainty to the marketplace, and put a law on the books that embraces the most popular DFS apps today.
Senate Bill 9044 / Assembly bill A10040
This bill is simple: it allows more operators into the market, even if they weren’t here before 2015. Not only does more operators mean more tax revenue, it also means more competition in the daily fantasy gaming market, a win for consumers.
